Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit 2026: Complete Guide

Graduating from a Canadian institution can be an important step toward building a career in Canada. For eligible international students, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) can provide an opportunity to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies.

However, graduating from a Canadian school does not automatically make every international student eligible for a PGWP. Eligibility depends on factors such as the institution and program, length of study, language proficiency, field of study where applicable, study status and when the study permit application was submitted.

Because Canada’s immigration rules have changed in recent years, students planning to study in Canada should understand the current PGWP requirements before choosing a program.

APPLY TO STUDY IN CANADA TODAY

What Is a Post-Graduation Work Permit?

A Post-Graduation Work Permit is an open work permit that allows eligible graduates of certain Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies.

A PGWP is not automatically issued to every graduate of a Canadian DLI. Students must meet specific eligibility requirements, and not every program offered by a DLI is necessarily PGWP-eligible.

This makes it important to check the eligibility of your specific institution and program before beginning your studies.

Who Can Apply for a PGWP in 2026?

To qualify under the general rules, you generally need to have:

  • Completed a program at a PGWP-eligible DLI.
  • Completed a program that was at least 8 months long, or 900 hours for applicable Quebec programs.
  • Maintained full-time student status during each semester of your program, with limited exceptions such as the final semester.
  • Applied for the PGWP within 180 days of confirmation that you completed your program.
  • Had a valid study permit at some point during the 180-day period after completing your program.

There are also special rules for certain situations, including transfers between schools, authorized study leave, distance learning and programs with overseas components.

Students should therefore check their individual circumstances rather than assuming that completing a Canadian program automatically qualifies them.

PGWP Language Requirements in 2026

Language proficiency is an important part of the current PGWP rules.

For PGWP applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, applicants generally need to provide proof of English or French language ability, except for certain flight-school graduates.

For graduates of bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree programs, the minimum requirement is generally Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) 7 in French across all four language abilities.

Graduates of other university programs generally require CLB/NCLC 7, while graduates of eligible college, polytechnic and other non-university programs generally require CLB/NCLC 5 in all four language abilities.

Students should verify the language test and score requirements applicable to their situation before applying.

Field of Study Requirements for PGWP

One of the major changes affecting some international students is the field-of-study requirement.

If you graduate with a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, you generally do not need to meet the field-of-study requirement.

However, some graduates of other university, college, polytechnic and non-university programs may need to have completed an eligible field of study, depending on when their study permit application was submitted.

Eligible fields are connected to occupations experiencing long-term labour shortages in Canada, and the list can change according to Canada’s labour-market needs.

For 2026, IRCC states that there will be no additions or removals to the eligible field-of-study list.

This is why prospective students should investigate PGWP eligibility before selecting a program.

How Long Is a PGWP Valid?

The length of your PGWP depends primarily on the length and level of your study program, as well as the expiry date of your passport.

Generally:

Programs Between 8 Months and Less Than 2 Years

If your eligible program is at least 8 months but less than 2 years, you may receive a PGWP for a period up to the length of your program.

For example, a student who completes a 9-month eligible program may receive a PGWP of up to 9 months.

Programs of 2 Years or More

If your eligible program is at least 2 years long, you may receive a PGWP valid for up to 3 years.

Master’s Degree Programs

Eligible master’s graduates can qualify for a 3-year PGWP even when the master’s program is less than two years, provided the program is at least 8 months long and the other requirements are met.

If you complete more than one eligible program, you may be able to combine the length of the programs when determining the duration of your PGWP, provided each program meets the applicable requirements.

What Documents Do You Need?

When applying for a PGWP, you need documents that demonstrate that you completed your studies and meet the applicable eligibility requirements.

These may include:

  • Proof of graduation
  • Degree, diploma or certificate
  • Official letter from your school
  • Official transcript
  • Proof of full-time enrollment
  • Language test results
  • Proof of an eligible field of study, where required
  • Proof of an upfront medical examination, where applicable

IRCC may request additional documents depending on your circumstances.

Make sure the information in your application is accurate and consistent with your academic records.

When Should You Apply for a PGWP?

You generally have 180 days after confirmation that you completed your program to apply for your PGWP.

Do not wait until the final days of the 180-day period.

Before applying, gather your academic documents, language results and other required information.

You should also pay attention to the expiry date of your study permit.

If your study permit expires before you receive your final marks, there are specific options available depending on your circumstances, including applying for a visitor record or leaving Canada and applying for the PGWP from outside Canada.

Can You Work While Your PGWP Application Is Being Processed?

Some graduates can work full-time while their PGWP application is being processed.

To qualify for this authorization, you generally need to have had a valid study permit when you submitted your application, completed your study program and been eligible to work off campus during your studies without a work permit.

You must also have complied with the applicable work-hour requirements while studying.

If these conditions do not apply to you, you may need to wait until you receive your work permit before starting a new job.

Can a PGWP Lead to Permanent Residence?

A PGWP itself is a temporary work authorization. However, gaining Canadian work experience may help some graduates qualify for future immigration programs.

Your eligibility for permanent residence depends on your personal circumstances, work experience, occupation, language ability and the requirements of the immigration program you apply through.

Students should therefore view the PGWP as an opportunity to gain professional experience rather than as an automatic pathway to permanent residence.

Who May Not Be Eligible for a PGWP?

You may not qualify if, for example, you:

  • Already received a PGWP.
  • Studied English or French as a second language.
  • Completed certain general-interest or self-improvement programs.
  • Completed a non-credit program, subject to applicable exceptions.
  • Studied at a DLI or in a program that is not PGWP-eligible.
  • Completed more than 50% of your program through distance learning, subject to applicable exceptions.
  • Do not meet the applicable language or field-of-study requirements.

There are special cases and exceptions, so students should check the official requirements for their particular circumstances.

Choosing a Program With the PGWP in Mind

If you are planning to study in Canada and hope to work after graduation, PGWP eligibility should be one of the factors you consider when choosing a program.

Before enrolling, investigate:

  • Whether the institution is a DLI
  • Whether the specific program is PGWP-eligible
  • Program duration
  • Your applicable language requirement
  • Whether a field-of-study requirement applies
  • The program’s career relevance
  • Your long-term educational and professional goals

Do not choose a program solely because you believe it will lead to a PGWP. Immigration policies can change, and eligibility depends on meeting the requirements in effect when you apply.

Common PGWP Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming Every Canadian Program Qualifies

Being admitted to a Canadian institution does not automatically guarantee PGWP eligibility.

Ignoring Program Eligibility

Check the specific program rather than looking only at the institution’s name.

Forgetting Language Requirements

Make sure you understand whether you need to provide language-test results and what score applies to you.

Choosing a Program Without Checking Field-of-Study Rules

Some non-degree programs may be subject to field-of-study requirements.

Waiting Too Long to Apply

Remember the 180-day application window after completing your program.

Allowing Your Passport to Expire

The length of your PGWP can be affected by your passport’s expiry date.

Final Thoughts

The Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit can be a valuable opportunity for eligible international students who want to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies.

However, PGWP eligibility is not automatic. Students need to consider their institution, program, program length, language requirements, field of study where applicable and other immigration conditions before making their educational decisions.

If you are planning to study in Canada, researching these requirements early can help you make a more informed choice about your program and future career plans.

Canadian immigration rules can change, so always verify the latest PGWP requirements with official Government of Canada sources before applying.
