For international students who want to gain Canadian education and practical career skills without committing to a multi-year degree, a one-year program can be an attractive option.
Canada offers a wide range of short, career-focused programs in areas such as business, information technology, healthcare, hospitality, skilled trades and other professional fields.
However, choosing a one-year program requires careful research. A short program is not automatically eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and completing a program at a designated learning institution (DLI) does not by itself guarantee PGWP eligibility. Students should verify the specific program and understand the rules that apply to their situation.

Why Choose a One-Year Program in Canada?
One-year programs can appeal to students who want a focused educational experience and practical skills within a relatively short period.
Potential benefits include:
- Focused career training
- Practical and industry-oriented education
- A shorter study period
- Lower total tuition than many longer programs
- Opportunities to develop specialized skills
- Potential pathways to further education
However, students should evaluate the entire program rather than choosing solely because it lasts one year.
1. Business Administration
Business administration is one of the most flexible areas for international students.
One-year programs may cover:
- Business management
- Marketing
- Human resources
- Accounting
- Entrepreneurship
- Office administration
- Business operations
Students can develop skills in communication, organization, customer service, administration and business operations.
This can be a good option for students who want a broad business foundation or who already have previous education and want to develop additional Canadian credentials.
2. Information Technology
Technology-related programs can be suitable for students interested in Canada’s digital economy.
Depending on the institution, one-year programs may focus on areas such as:
- Information technology
- Computer systems
- Software development
- Networking
- Cybersecurity
- Web development
- Database technologies
Before applying, compare the curriculum of each program carefully. Look for opportunities to develop practical technical skills rather than choosing a program based only on its title.
Some technology and STEM fields are currently included in Canada’s PGWP field-of-study framework for students who are subject to that requirement.
3. Healthcare Administration
Students interested in healthcare but not necessarily pursuing a regulated clinical profession can explore healthcare administration programs.
Courses may cover:
- Healthcare administration
- Medical office procedures
- Health records
- Healthcare communication
- Office management
- Healthcare systems
These programs can help students develop administrative and organizational skills for healthcare-related workplaces.
Students should distinguish between healthcare administration programs and programs that qualify graduates for regulated healthcare professions.
4. Early Childhood Education
Early childhood education is another field international students may consider.
Programs can introduce students to:
- Child development
- Early learning
- Childcare practices
- Health and safety
- Learning environments
- Family and community relationships
Education is among the categories included in Canada’s current PGWP field-of-study framework.
Students should check the requirements of the province where they intend to work because early childhood education and related occupations can have provincial registration or certification requirements.
5. Hospitality Management
Students interested in hotels, restaurants, tourism and customer service can explore one-year hospitality programs.
Potential areas include:
- Hotel operations
- Hospitality management
- Food and beverage operations
- Customer service
- Tourism
- Event management
Hospitality education can provide practical knowledge for students interested in service-oriented careers and businesses.
6. Supply Chain and Logistics
Supply chain and logistics programs can be suitable for students interested in business operations and the movement of goods.
A one-year program may cover:
- Procurement
- Inventory management
- Warehousing
- Transportation
- Purchasing
- Logistics
- Supply chain operations
Students can develop organizational, analytical and operational skills that are useful across different industries.
7. Accounting
Accounting programs can be an option for students who enjoy working with numbers and financial information.
A one-year program may introduce students to:
- Financial accounting
- Bookkeeping
- Payroll
- Taxation
- Financial reporting
- Accounting software
- Business mathematics
Before choosing a program, students should research the requirements for any professional accounting designation they may eventually want to pursue.
8. Skilled Trades and Technical Programs
Students who prefer practical learning can consider technical and skilled-trade programs.
Potential areas include:
- Construction
- Welding
- Electrical technology
- Automotive technology
- Industrial mechanics
- HVAC
- Manufacturing technology
Trade-related fields are represented among Canada’s current PGWP-eligible fields of study for students subject to the field-of-study requirement.
However, some trades require apprenticeships, examinations, certification or other provincial requirements before someone can work in a particular occupation.
9. Environmental Technology
Environmental programs can be suitable for students interested in sustainability, environmental protection and technical work.
Possible subjects include:
- Environmental technology
- Environmental management
- Waste management
- Water quality
- Sustainability
- Natural resources
Several environmental-related fields appear within Canada’s current STEM field-of-study framework.
10. Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is another option for students interested in online business and communications.
Programs can cover:
- Social media marketing
- Search engine optimization
- Content marketing
- Digital advertising
- Email marketing
- Website analytics
- E-commerce
These skills can be applied across industries because businesses increasingly use digital channels to reach customers.
Students should focus on programs that include practical projects and current digital tools.
Are One-Year Programs Eligible for a PGWP?
This is one of the most important questions international students should ask before enrolling.
Generally, to meet the basic program-length requirement, a study program must be at least 8 months long or 900 hours for applicable Quebec programs, and it must be at a PGWP-eligible DLI. Students must also meet other eligibility requirements.
For an eligible program that is at least 8 months but less than two years, IRCC says the PGWP may generally be issued for up to the same length as the study program.
For example, a qualifying one-year program may result in a PGWP of up to one year.
Importantly, not every one-year program qualifies. Current rules also include language requirements and, for certain non-degree programs, field-of-study requirements depending on when the student’s study permit application was submitted.
How to Choose the Right One-Year Program
Check the DLI
Make sure the institution is on Canada’s official Designated Learning Institutions list. The government specifically warns that not all programs offered by a DLI are PGWP-eligible.
Check the Program
Verify the exact program’s eligibility rather than relying only on the school’s name.
Consider Your Career Goals
Choose a program that develops skills relevant to the type of career you want to pursue.
Review Admission Requirements
Check academic prerequisites, English or French language requirements and any additional documents needed.
Compare Costs
Consider tuition as well as accommodation, transportation, food, books, insurance and other living expenses.
Check Current Immigration Requirements
PGWP rules can change. IRCC currently states that the 2026 eligible field-of-study list will have no additions or removals during 2026.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Assuming Every One-Year Program Qualifies for a PGWP
Program length alone does not guarantee eligibility.
Choosing Only Based on Cost
A cheaper program may not provide the skills or career preparation you need.
Ignoring the Field of Study
Some students in non-degree programs may need to graduate from an eligible field of study for PGWP purposes.
Forgetting Language Requirements
Current PGWP applicants in many program categories need to provide proof of English or French language ability.
Not Checking Professional Licensing
Some careers require additional certification or registration after graduation.
Final Thoughts
The best one-year programs in Canada for international students are those that provide useful skills, fit the student’s academic background and support realistic career goals.
Business, information technology, healthcare administration, early childhood education, hospitality, supply chain, accounting, skilled trades, environmental technology and digital marketing are among the areas students can explore.
If you are planning to study in Canada, research your institution and specific program carefully. If working in Canada after graduation is important to you, confirm the program’s current PGWP eligibility before applying.
